Leadership to Mitigate Environmental Degradation

Joyous day! With the inauguration of Joe Biden, issues regarding the environment and mitigating climate change are back on the table! We will rejoin the Paris Climate Accord as well as our role as international environmental leaders. Pipelines are off the table and our aquatic and atmospheric resources will be safer because of it. I’m sure changes will be made in the EPA to protect us from toxic chemicals in our food, soils, air and water. For the first time in years, I feel hopeful again about our grandchildren’s future.

From coastal towns to rural farms to urban centers, climate change poses an existential threat – not just to our environment, but to our health, our communities, our national security, and our economic well-being. It also damages our communities with storms that wreak havoc on our towns and cities and our homes and schools. It puts our national security at risk by leading to regional instability that will require U.S military-supported relief activities and could make areas more vulnerable to terrorist activities.”

I have continually stated if we put the same energy into sustainable energy as we put into getting men on the moon, we can achieve any goal we set for ourselves. I hope we haven’t waited too long. Lately I have been discussing postsustainability and deep adaptation as a reality. I see this less as pessimistic and more as practical ways to begin to adapt to the environmental changes that will come. Government moves slowly, and we need drastic changes in our energy production as well as our agribusiness practices to mitigate the effects of letting corporations destroy and profit off our commons, our national resources. But at least we now have leadership that recognizes the urgency of climate change and the political will to do something about it. I’m just tickled pink that we now have a POTUS who values our natural resources, a grandfather who cares about our descendant’s quality of life as much as I do.
